Fiber optic careers in the U.S. broadband boom

Billions in federal funding. Fiber builds in every state. Not enough trained hands.

The United States is in the middle of the largest broadband buildout in its history. The $42.45-billion BEAD program is funding fiber-to-the-home networks in every state, on top of the $1.2-trillion infrastructure law already moving through utility construction. All of that fiber has to be designed, buried, spliced, tested, and lit — by people. And the industry is short of them.

What do fiber optic technicians actually do?

  • Splicers fuse hair-thin glass strands into permanent, low-loss connections — the craft skill at the heart of every network.
  • Installers place conduit and cable underground and overhead, and bring the drop to the customer's door.
  • Network designers plan the routes, splitter locations, and capacity before a shovel moves.
  • Deployment managers run the whole lifecycle — permits, construction, splicing, turn-up, operations.

What does fiber work pay?

Telecommunications line installers and repairers earn a median of $74,330 per year — about $35.73 per hour — according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025). Skilled splicers are among the most sought-after crews on any build, and the federal funding pipeline means years of work ahead, not a one-season spike.

Why now is the entry window

Fiber construction scales with funding, and the funding is committed. States are awarding BEAD projects now; contractors are staffing splice crews, drop crews, and construction managers ahead of build schedules. When a trade grows faster than its talent pool, employers train and sponsor newcomers. That's the window.

How to start without experience

CUTI's fiber pathway covers the whole spectrum. Start with Fiber Splicing to learn the core craft, step up to FTTH Network Design, or take the flagship FTTH Deployment & Management program — a 4-week intensive that runs from fiber physics and permits to construction, splicing, and live network operations. Every route pairs classroom learning with real field training, a paid 3-month practicum, and $0 tuition with employer sponsorship.

The networks are funded. The crews aren't full. Train for fiber now and enter the industry while it's still hiring ahead of the build.
